playing the part of the loveable foreigner (I dated a guy from NoCal for a while, and he had no discernible accent to me. People hear what they want to hear, I think. But coming form a European/UK person, I’d probably just assume they mean “oh, you don’t slaughter your vowels”. Which is totally a compliment!)

Or possibly that I don’t have a drawl/sound like (their idea of) a cowboy? My mother’s family is from Georgia so I actually have a gigantic soft spot for a touch of southern. But yeah, every time somebody assumes I belong on this side of the ocean I count it as a minor win.
